NAGA

The Northern Alliance for Greenhouse Action began operating in 2002 as an informal network that shares information, coordinates community based emission reduction activities and cooperates on the research and development of innovative corporate emissions projects. NAGA's goal is to achieve significant greenhouse abatement by delivering effective programs and leveraging council, community and business action.

NAGA's members
NAGA's members are the Cities of Banyule, Darebin, Hume, Manningham, Melbourne, Moreland, Whittlesea, Yarra, Nillumbik Shire Council and the Moreland Energy Foundation Limited (MEFL).

NAGA's Governance
NAGA's governance structures have been expanded and formalised, to ensure sound and effective decision-making; incorporate processes for accountability to the alliance as an entity and to individual alliance members; and to maintain effective communication and information exchange within NAGA's network. NAGA has an Executive that meets quarterly with one representative (councillor or senior staff) from each member organisation. NAGA has a Steering Committee that meets at least bimonthly, with representatives (officer or coordinator) from each member organisation. In addition NAGA has formed a number of Working Groups to allow detailed project management and/or technical discussion and information exchange.

Towards Zero Net Emissions in the NAGA Region
Towards Zero Net Emissions for the NAGA Region (TZNE) responds to the urgent need to reduce greenhouse emissions by providing for the first time in Australia, a comprehensive and evidence-based regional direction for carbon mitigation to 2020.
The final report is now available and can be downloaded by clicking the link below.

NAGA's projects
NAGA is implementing community emission reduction projects, and undertaking research into reducing carbon emissions across the NAGA region. NAGA members are also encouraged to establish their own cutting edge projects, which can act as pilots for future NAGA projects.
Over the last 3 years, NAGA has attracted more than $1,400,000 in cash and in-kind contributions to implement climate change action projects in the NAGA region, demonstrating significant emission reduction innovation at the local government and regional level.

Advocacy
NAGA plays an active role advocating on climate change issues of importance to local government. Advocacy activity includes preparing written submissions, and appearing at public hearings to a number of State and Federal Government inquiries.
