Adapting to climate change

CLIMATE EMERGENCY /ELECTRICITY / SOLAR FOR HOUSEHOLDS / ENERGY PLANNING / EMBEDDING / ADAPTING TO CLIMATE CHANGE

Local government is on the frontline of dealing with the impacts of climate change.

NAGA councils are at the forefront of responding to the impacts of climate change.
  • In 2014, we conducted an integrated regional vulnerability assessment to identify populations, infrastructure and assets at particular risk from climate change in northern metropolitan Melbourne - Adaptation in the North;
  • From October to November 2015, NAGA delivered a customised training program for council asset and facility managers to embed building vulnerability assessment approaches within asset management practices and capital works programs;
  • In 2017-2018 NAGA worked with the other inner-city Alliances  (WAGA, SECCCA and EAGA), to deliver a three-part gap analysis for the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) to assist in developing regional priorities for adaptation based on the climate change impacts the Port Philip (Greater Melbourne) region is likely to experience, the needs and values of the community, and work undertaken to date. We are now building on this gap analysis in Exploring Vulnerabilities, a project exploring the specific impacts and needs of at-risk communities and business sectors.
  • NAGA has produced an Adaptation Guide for developing local adaptation plans. This details some considerations for adaptation planning and a synthesis of typical climate change adaptation actions across council service areas;
  • The City of Yarra has released tools and a training package from its award-winning Embedding Adaptation project. Includes case studies, guides for assessing the impact of climate change on projects and buildings, and a quadruple bottom line reporting tool.
