The Victorian Greenhouse Alliances are leading an Electricity Working Group for Victorian councils to pursue opportunities for procuring and investing in renewable energy.
The Working Group initiated a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for Victorian councils to procure low cost renewable energy. Darebin City Council is leading this process. The first stage - a formal business case that tested the viability of the project with energy retailers - has concluded, and over 40 councils are anticipated to proceed to the tender stage.
A discussion paper provides a summary of new and emerging opportunities for Victorian councils to collectively procure best value electricity whilst meeting multiple policy commitments and objectives, particularly with respect to emissions reduction.

This paper informed the development of the Electricity Working Group. The feasibility studies on large scale solar and local energy trading will also inform the work of the group.
