Following Darebin City Council declaring a climate emergency in 2016, more than 100 municipalities across Australia, representing over eight million people, as well as 1,400 local governments across the world have declared or acknowledged a climate emergency.
Darebin City Council commissioned NAGA to consult with councils across Australia with a view to setting up a mechanism to enable local government to work together on the climate emergency. NAGA worked with councils from across the country to set up Climate Emergency Australia (CEA) for a 12 month pilot period.
CEA became operational in June 2020, funded by 13 founding funder councils. It now works on a membership model. Formerly hosted by the City of Melbourne and run by NAGA, from 2022 it is hosted and run by Hume City Council.
More information is available on the CEA website.
